Understanding Notary Fees in North Carolina

As a notary public in North Carolina, it's important to understand the NC Notary fees that can be charged for notarial acts. House Bill 776 has brought about changes to notary fees, including the maximum fee for traditional notarial acts, electronic notarization, and mobile notaries.

As of July 1, 2022, the maximum fee that can be charged for traditional notarial acts has increased from $5 to $10 per principal signature for acknowledgments, jurats, and verification or proof, and from $5 to $10 per person for oaths and affirmations. Additionally, the maximum fee for electronic notarization has increased from $10 to $15.

Mobile notaries can now charge a premium rate of $0.65 per mile when traveling to perform notarial acts, which can be a significant expense for clients in rural areas or for notaries who frequently travel long distances.

Some common documents that may require notarization and can be signed for $10 per signature include:

  • Power of attorney documents

  • Affidavits

  • Deeds

  • Wills

  • Loan documents

  • Trust agreements

It's important to note that notaries in North Carolina cannot charge a fee for notarizing absentee ballots or administering oaths of office to elected officials.

In addition to the standard fees for notarial acts, notaries may charge a premium for after-hours signatures. This fee compensates the notary for their time outside of their normal working hours. It's important to discuss any potential after-hours fees with your notary ahead of time to avoid any unexpected charges.

As of 2023, mobile notaries in North Carolina can charge a premium rate of $0.65 per mile when traveling to perform notarial acts. This rate applies one way and is meant to compensate the notary for their time and travel expenses.

In conclusion, understanding notary fees in North Carolina is important for both notaries and clients. With the recent changes to fees for traditional notarial acts, electronic notarization, and mobile notaries, it's important to stay informed and understand the costs involved. By knowing which documents require notarization and what fees to expect, clients can save time and money when working with a notary public in North Carolina.
